Village Creek Paddle: March 12

David Booth, a member of the Bayou Haystackers and of Pelican Paddlers is leading this trip however, it's not an "official" BHPC trip. Contact David at david@boothenvironmental.com for any rules and/or details, or to sign up.

This is a highly acclaimed paddle seen in recent national paddling publications. ONE OF THE BEST CANOE TRAILS IN THE REGION.  This location is deep in the heart of the BIG THICKET. It is a wilderness area and there is virtually no development on the banks of this portion of Village Creek. It is a wonderful trip.

This is a full day, moderate trip. It is great for canoes or shorter kayaks. Not recommended for longer sea kayaks (greater than 15 ft) due to maneuverability in tight areas. Canoe and kayak rentals are available through the local outfitter Eastex Canoe Trails. See their info on Village Creek at http://eastexcanoes.com/canoeing_village_creek.html .

PADDLING PLAN:

March 12, 2011 Saturday: Meet/Leave at WalMart on Nelson Road at 7 am

Drive to Village Creek Put in: Highway 418 Bridge just east of Kountze , TX 30 deg, 23 min 52.09 sec/ N, 94 deg, 15 min 52.76 sec W.

Take out is Highway 327 Bridge West of Silsbee, Tx 30 deg 20 min 49.30 sec/N, and 94 deg 14 min 20.58 Sec W

Stream mileage is 8.6 miles and will take 4-6 hours depending on water flow. Anticipate being on the water about 10 am and taking out between 3 and 4 pm, but that can change.

We will use Eastex CanoeTrails for the Shuttle service It will cost a minimum of $25 for us or $5 per driver shuttled whichever is greater. This is the most convenient way to arrange this.

We will unload all boats and equipment at the upper bridge (Hwy 418) and then run the cars downstream to the take out at the Hwy 327 bridge. EastTex will then shuttle us back up to the put in and we can GO!

When we arrive at the take out spot (Hwy 327), we can load and leave as we please with no hassle for the shuttles etc. Dinner on the way home in Beaumont at a good restaurant. Bring a change of clothes. Drinking water, food, sunscreen, bug spray and the usual stuff.

This is a moderate trip with some log pull overs and much wilderness.
