Red CrossWilderness First Aid Course
April 3 & 4

Purpose: To teach first aid skills and knowledge for settings in which emergency care is delayed for long periods, or self evacuation is necessary.

Prerequisites: None; although minimum age 15 highly recommended.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify how to respond to emergency situations in delayed emergency help situations.
  • Identify causes of injuries and ways injuries can be prevented in wilderness areas.
  • Learn proper advance preparation for journeys into the backcountry.
  • Learn the Emergency Action Steps for first aid response to be employed when EMS is not readily available.
  • Learn basic and more advanced first aid techniques to use when an injury occurs.
  • Learn how to respond to an emotionally upset victim.
  • Learn short distance transfer and evacuation techniques.

Experience providing wilderness first aid through the means of scenarios and simulated rescues that test knowledge and skills.

Place: BHPC meeting room, 118 North Cypress Street, Hammond, LA. (See map on page 2)

March 13 - 14: Traditional Kayaking Courses Offered in Abita Springs

This course imparts knowledge about the history of kayaking and the relevance of that history to modern disciplines in the sport, and emphasizes effective boat control with a narrow-bladed paddle.  Novice through expert paddlers will learn about different historical traditions in kayaking, and methods for travel, turning and bracing, and rolling in a variety of conditions.  Participants will develop balance and confidence in techniques that can reduce fatigue and improve performance in sea kayaking and other paddlesport disciplines.

Course Fee
The $85 course fee ($90 for non-ACA members) is payable upon registration.  This amount includes instruction, insurance, resource materials, and snacks and beverages during breaks.  It does not include all equipment; rental fees may apply for boats.  Please make checks payable to Rebecca Molina.

June 5 & 6, 2004: Sugar Mill Paddle
A tour of the beautiful Bayou Teche

Paddlers will have a choice of routes from 10 to 50 miles. Whether paddling slow or fast, boaters will enjoy the beautiful scenery that includes cypress knee lined banks, several sugar mill sites, plantation homes, historic landmarks, moss draped oak trees and prominent wildlife.

The event, hosted by the Jeanerette Chamber of Commerce, winds through Loreauville, New Iberia, Jeanerette, Charenton, Baldwin, Franklin and Centerville. Paddlers will be supplied water, food and camping sites. The City of Jeanerette is providing the park, located on the Bayou Teche, to camp in. Jeanerette is the midway point of the paddle. Emergency and other support and restroom accommodations will be available. The cost is $35 for both days and includes camping Saturday night, drinks and food.
